Puppy Linux in Virtual Machine

Puppy Linux 4.3.1rc2 in VirtualBox runs well, see the Forum article by playdayz.

... useful for those running Windows, so they might have a Puppy on their desktop...

...needs a physical machine with 1GB ram for VirtualBox and Puppy to run in Windows safely (or at least 768MB...)

1) download and install VirtualBox;
2) download and unpack this zip archive; the archive is 254MB and the unzipped folder is 274MB (the [size] increase over Puppy 4.3.1 is to install the VirtualBox services in order that all features will work; check download with md5sum = ee06f7ac6959b31e012aa8b352e9b849);
3) open VirtualBox and "File -> Import Appliance" and select the ovf file inside the folder Puppy431rc2. When it has been imported, select that virtual machine in VirtualBox and click Start. (Testing in XP, I had to manually enable some of the options such as USB and Network--just look at the list of options when you select Puppy 4.3.1 and click each option and then click the Enable box.)

Puppy 4.3.1-release-candidate

From Barry's blog:

Puppy 4.3.1 is a bug-fix release of 4.3...

It is still a release candidate, to be used for testing if bugs in 4.30 have been removed.

Download the RC-1 ISO from here.

Breaking News: RC-2 is ready, get it from here. See Barry's post about RC-2.

Note that for RC-1, you can get the new Puppy files directly from the "inside-iso" subdirectory (ie, no need to get the ISO).

For service pack-style update for your system, get the PET here. After downloading, click on it to update your 4.30 install (or pup_save.2fs) to 4.31.

Please report bugs in the Forum.

(Click on the image to download: user=puppy password=linux)

ChoicePup is a stripped version of Puppy with major software provided by separate SFS files which can be installed and uninstalled quickly, easily and as needed. This makes it versatile and low on computer resource use.

Forum discussion: 4.31 (new) and 4.12 (original)

Download from here.

Note: Choicepup enables you to load/unload sfs files by right-click.

Puppy Linux for Safe Internet Banking - Australian Detective

From itnews.com.au:

"If you are using the internet for a commercial transaction, use a Linux boot up disk - such as Ubuntu or some of the other flavours. Puppylinux is a nice small distribution that boots up fairly quickly.

"It gives you an operating system which is perfectly clean and operates only in the memory of the computer and is a perfectly safe way of doing internet banking," van der Graaf said.

OpenOffice and C-IDE sfs for Puppy 4.30

Barry Kauler has built and posted sfs4 packages for Puppy Linux 4.30:

  • OpenOffice 3.1.1 sfs 176 MB - Office suite that can open MSOffice 2007 files. See the Forum discussion (do not download from there as the format is for older Puppy version);
  • Anjuta C-IDE 71 MB - development environment for C/C++ (For programmers only - use it with devx sfs).

To use the sfs, download from ibiblio and place in your /mnt/home directory (you must be saving files already to your data drive).

Start Menu - System - BootManager and click on the "Choose which extra SFS" button.
Launch the BootManager

Choose from the left box the sfs to be loaded and click the "Add" arrow to place it on the right box.
Choose the SFS to be loaded

Click OK, reboot and start using the sfs!

NOTE: These sfs4 packages will work only with Puppy Linux 4.30 or newer (i.e., not on older versions). Also, you must be using pup_save.2fs, such as with live CD, USB or frugal installation, NOT full installation.

For full installation, mount the sfs by clicking on it and then copy the files to the proper directories of your full install. Click again on the sfs to un-mount it. Reboot or refresh menus. See also the SFS installer package for full installation here.

Puppy Linux 4.4CE Development Starts

September 23, 2009 - Five days after the release of version 4.3, the development of the next version, 4.4CE, has started. This will be a community edition that follows every official release since version 4.1. The last community edition was 4.2CE (already updated to 4.2.1).

Technosaurus' avatar

Brad (Technosaurus in the Forum) has accepted the challenge of leading 4.4CE. Brad is a young engineer-manager with a second degree in Computer Science. His first project as Puppy Linux enthusiast is the Puppy Desktop. He has also written a howto in PET packaging for Puppy. Lately, he has been compiling small applications for Puppy Linux. Brad lives and works in the Central United States.

Warren Wilson, Barry's fellow Australian, was the leader of 4.2CE.

See the related discussion of 4.4CE.
