Puppy-4.2.1-MULTIUSER.iso

Nov 10, 2009 - Puppy-4.2.1-MULTIUSER.iso revision 3 is available!

Pizzasgood's avatarOn Oct 5, 2009, Pizzasgood, the youngest but one of the prolific developers of Puppy Linux, released the much-awaited multiuser puplet - see the Forum for his original post:

puppy-4.2.1-MULTIUSER-r3.iso - (101 MB) or try russoodle's mirror (user puppy password linux)
md5sum ff7e5a22b6eecc6db0b5b809278198e4
...

"This is a multiuser version [revision 2] of Puppy 4.2.1. Initially, it should work just like a normal 4.2.1 Puppy - you are automatically logged in as root. However, there are a few new wizards in the Setup section of the menu. One for adding new users. One for changing your password. And one for disabling the automatic login. The idea here is that this could be used as a standard Puppy, without impacting the vast majority who like to be root, while still allowing the few who really have good reasons to not be root to do as they choose with minimum effort. Which also means they stop complaining about how they don't like being root. So it's a win for everybody."

One-Click Puppy in Windows

Nov 3, 2009 - One-Click Puppy 4.3.1 in Windows is released by Forum member puppymartin.

Today I made a Puppy 4.3.1 QEMU-install. Sound doesn't work after reboot and it is not very fast, but it is fun. (also installed 4.3.1 in Virtual PC Windows 7. It was very fast.)

Windows only: download, unzip and click "Start_Puppy.bat" this file [zip].

For feedback, see puppymartin's Forum post.

FIREDOG - Released in late October 2009 by Forum member sc0ttman, Firedog uses Firefox 2.0.0.20 (last of the 2 series) with lots of added extensions, such as "E-Mail, News, IRC Client, FTP Client, WYSIWYG Editor, Flash Player, help-viewer & more..." Adobe Flash 9 is included (old and speedy), which you can update to a newer version. See the Forum post.

Download the Firedog 1.2 PET 14.4 MB, md5sum = 2b9b4976f2f8d0684c120b0f2e367bbd

FIREPUP - If you want an older build than Firedog, try Firepup by ttuuxxx. Firepup is based on Firefox 1.5 and contains few essential add-ons, among them are Flashblock and ChatZilla.

Download the Firepup PET 11.6 MB, md5sum = 42346ae07eb75d62f32d001759be6494

Go-OpenOffice Available as sfs4

Oct 31, 2009 - Forum member playdayz made available Go-OpenOffice 3.1.1 (see his Forum post):

"If anyone is interested I made an sfs of go-openoffice 3.1.1. The hype is that it is faster starting up (it is fast in my experience), lighter weight, more compatible with microsoft office documents, and with a less cluttered interface.. This is No frills.. there are no menu entries or other conveniences. The desktop files for each program are in /opt/openoffice.org3/share/xdg, and you can drag them to the desktop for convenience. "

Important: Use this only with Puppy 4.3.1 or newer version. Look here for an example of the use of sfs in PuppyLinux 4.3.1 (bugfix version of 4.3).

Download the sfs 163 MB md5sum 63c6a76d95a806c4c8ca9fc802585b35
Mirror with sfs3 (for Puppy 4.2.1 or earlier)

Drive-Resident Opera Browser

Oct 30, 2009 - Opera Browser Suite was updated to version 10.01.

Since March 2009, Forum member Mikhalis from Greece has been releasing different builds of Opera:

"Opera [as] static pet, with separate pets for the languages, flashblocker and adblocker. Also 2 portable versions one default with all the languages and one a bit customized and tweaked with only in english."

Download Opera PET (~10 mb) and locales (~3 mb)

The portable versions are in a tar.gz form not pet and so you can extract them to anywhere you want outside from the pup save file like other partition or a usb flash drive. Also they can be used from different puppys. Even more if you are using windows you can link the window version to use the profile folder made in the place where you extracted the files and so have the same profile folder. The profile folder is where the user settings are stored.

In order to launch opera from the portables versions you only need to click in the opera file that you will see. You can also link it to your desktop or anywhere you want. Unfortunately there is no menu entry because it's portable..

The first version is just clean plain Opera with all the locales. The second one [the customized] is Opera with flash-block and ad-block out of the box and a little bit tweaked and puppy-made by me.

Download the first version (~12 mb) and the second version (~9 mb).

For feedback, go to Mikhalis' Forum post.

For Firefox-based Puppy browsers, look here.

Distrowatch - What is a good Linux distro for older hardware?

Oct 26, 2009 - To the question "What distribution would you recommend for older, low-specification hardware?", Jesse Smith lists, from large to small:
  1. Slax
  2. Puppy
  3. Damn Small
Jesse added: "Puppy Linux is a really easy-to-use mini-Linux which does a fine job of balancing performance with ease of use. Chances are if you're new to Linux in general, the user interface of Puppy will put you at ease. I used to shy away from recommending this distro because it didn't really handle multiple user accounts, but I understand this has been improved upon recently."

XOpup development starts

Oct 23, 2009 - Puppy Linux developer ttuuxxx just received 2 units of the XO-1 laptops for the development of XOpup (puplet for the XO-1).

ttuuxxx avatar ".. I received the 2X laptops today, They are the current model, I did specifically ask for the next generation or prototype, the reason is that, if this takes like 6 months [like 2.14X did], then once it's finished it could be useless. Also the power adapters are North American.. so I have to go out and buy 2x 12V adapters." - see the Forum for the full post.

According to Forum member mavrothal, as many as 1 million XO users can benefit from the expected snappy XOpup.

ttuuxxx has successfully updated Puppy Linux 214R, a special puplet built by Forum members pakt and dougal using Puppy Linux version 2.14 which, in turn, was based on Linux kernel version 2.6.18. Called 214X, ttuuxxx's puplet sports new libraries and Firefox 3.5.

ttuuxxx helped a lot in the development of Puppy Linux CE 4.2 and, since the release of 4.2CE, has ben releasing a Firefox version of Puppy Linux that he called "Puppies". Look here for Puppies 4.2.1 and there for Puppies 4.3.1.
