New Wary Puppy is Released

March 3, 2013 - System-level updates for WaryPuppy (home-grown Puppy for older PCs) have been made by Barry Kauler, creator of Puppy Linux. Open this folder for ISO download and release notes of the new WaryPuppy version 5.5.


April 5, 2012 - Wary Puppy 5.3 is released, see the announcement by Barry Kauler. There is now greater support for internationalization, and lots of bugs have been fixed. Language "langpacks" are now available with included translations for both the system and applications. It has also been updated to version 2.6.32.59 of the LTS kernel.

Wary 5.3 runs well on old PCs, but it can upgrade display for new PCs with the new Xorg 7.6 - try Menu-Setup-Video Upgrade Wizard. The screenshot shows the Wary desktop.

October 14, 2011 - Wary Puppy 5.2 is released, see the announcement by Barry Kauler. There is a service pack of October 28, 2011 that brings the version to 5.2.1.

Wary Puppy 5.2.1 has:

  • new or upgraded applications such as PupCamera and PuppyPhone (Psip);
  • lots of recompiled and updated packages, enabling the old-hardware-friendly Xorg 7.3 to be upgraded to the newer Xorg 7.6 using a single PET mega-package (choose ALL in the Package Manager and locate the xorg76_mega_pkg at the bottom of the list);
  • better stability with continuing bug fixes and long-term supported kernel 2.6.32 build 45.

August 29, 2011 - Wary Puppy 5.1.4 is released, see the announcement by Barry Kauler. There is a bugfix of August 31, 2011 that brings the version to 5.1.4.1.

May 25, 2011 - Wary Puppy 5.1.2 is released, see the announcement by Barry Kauler.

This new Wary Puppy has:

  • better stability with bug fixes and long-term supported kernel 2.6.32;
  • better compatibility with older hardware, with new sound setup wizard;
  • better internationalization with UTF-8 support (changed from utf8);
  • complete applications for daily use, with additional packages available through the Package Manager (RPM packages can now be used!);
  • graphical SFS downloader (sfs files are large blocks of applications added as a single file, like OpenOffice);
  • BaCon (BASIC to C) support for executables (optionally add development tools through the devx.sfs);
  • new user fido, a non-root user.

This is the latest Puppy Linux from chief developer Barry Kauler:

  • built for long-term support;
  • available as small 100-MB build (no big analog modem, SCSI and "exotic" modules, no Adobe Flash Player) and as 125-MB standard build;
  • includes X-org 7.3 for better compatibility with older hardware;
  • built on kernel 2.6.31.14;
  • has complete applications for daily use, with additonal packages compiled from source in T2 (see Setup - Package Manager);
  • can use large applications as SFS add-ons from here (place the SFS in /mnt/home and reboot).
